Expect Higher Standards

DBK would like to thank our employees and community for helping us grow over the past 3 years.

DBK Inc., a DeBary-based, full-service commercial and residential construction and service company with operations in several states, recently was cited as being in the top 15 percent of the nation’s 5,000 fastest-growing companies. Inc. magazine’s 34th annual “Inc. 5000” list ranks companies on the basis of percentage of revenue growth over the past three years.

DBK ranked 687 on the latest list with 658-percent growth and revenue of $16.8 million in 2014. The company added 36 jobs, to bring its workforce to 61 employees, according to Inc.’s data.

This is the first year DBK, started by Damon Kruid in his garage in 2007, has been on the list.  As impressive as that ranking is, however, what may be more notable is how owner Kruid treats his customers, employees and community.

The company’s motto is “Expect Higher Standards,” with an emphasis on quality work.

“We turn down many jobs,” said Kenny Bonnett Jr., DBK’s vice president of marketing. “If we can’t keep the quality, we don’t want to do the job.”

Employees, too, are held to a higher standard, Bonnett said. All employees wear uniforms, and company vehicles are washed every week. Even the company headquarters at 398 S. Shell Road gets a pressure-cleaning several times a year, he said.

But the trade-off is that Kruid takes very good care of his workers.

“Damon’s vision statement is ‘Have a vision of what you want; then inspire and empower your team to get there with you.’ He wants to keep employees happy and wanting to work,” Bonnett said. “He wants the workplace to be like home.”

To that end, Kruid has employee-appreciation days, complete with water slides, food and music; Thanksgiving dinners for employees and their families; a chili cook-off for employees every February; and an employee-of-the-month program in which the winner gets a gift card and his or her picture on the company’s Facebook page.

The community also benefits from Kruid’s generosity, Bonnett said. DBK has a float every year in DeBary’s Christmas parade (winning last year). DBK recently donated $5,000 to DeBary Elementary School, and has raised funds for the DeBary Veterans of Foreign Wars post, breast-cancer awareness, Relay for Life, Toys for Tots, and Operation Christmas Child, which sends toys to children in other countries.

Kruid also is in the process of creating the Kruid Charitable Foundation, a nonprofit that will help empower veterans and their families, and help the needy. Kruid’s wife, Danielle, will head the foundation, Bonnett said.

“Damon’s whole goal is to get bigger to take care of more people,” he said. “The bigger he gets, the more people he can help.”

It’s apparent he’s well along on reaching that goal.
